Alpha Delta Pi was founded on May 15, 1851 at the first college for women, Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia. The founders of Alpha Delta Pi are Eugenia Tucker, Ella Pierce, Octavia Andrew, Bettie Williams, Sophronia Woodruff, and Mary A. Evans. Alpha Delta Pi was originally called the Adelphean Society and was the first sorority in the world. The founders established Alpha Delta Pi with the goals of advancing in leadership, scholarship, sisterhood, and service to others. It is appropriate that the first sorority was established at Wesleyan Female College as this was the first college to grant degrees to women.

In 1851 The United States did not have equal rights for women, and women did not have the right to vote. Many women were not educated, and those who were usually came from highly educated families that valued intellect. Alpha Delta Pi’s mission statement explains that: “Established in 1851, Alpha Delta Pi is committed to sisterhood, values and ethics, high academic standards and social responsibility.” This mission statement has held true over time and sisters of Alpha Delta Pi work hard to live up to those standards.

Alpha Delta Pi is active in volunteering in the community and fundraising for national charities. Members can be seen wearing their Alpha Delta Pi sweatshirts, hats, T-shirts, pins, and apparel while devoting their time and efforts to charities. Alpha Delta Pi has contributed over two million dollars to the Ronald McDonald House Charities since they decided to take up this worthy cause in 1979. They also offer grants to other non-profit organizations that serve children in need. The members of Alpha Delta Pi are truly committed to community service and philanthropy.

That is why they offer many different scholarships to their members. The colors are also proudly displayed at formal events with white and azure blue Alpha Delta Pi party favors, glasses, and other merchandise. These colors are also important during rush, when students pledge Alpha Delta Pi in hopes of becoming a member.
