Alpha Gamma Delta was formed on May 30, 1904 at Syracuse University in New York. The founders of Alpha Gamma Delta are Marguerite Shepard, Estelle Shepard Beswick, Georgia Alberta Dickover, Jennie Titus Smith Morris, Ethel Evelyn Brown Distin, Grace Mosher Harter, Edith MacConnel Hickok, Mary Louise Snider, Georgia Otis Chipman, Emily Helen Butterfield, and Flora Knight Mayer. The founders created Alpha Gamma Delta to make a sisterhood where women could inspire each other to be better in their lives and have a positive impact on the world.

The Alpha Gamma Delta sorority supports many community and national charities. Their main focus is on the education, health, and awareness surrounding diabetes. Alpha Gamma Delta partnered with the Center for Disease Control, and The National Diabetes Education Program to come up with Pacesetters. Pacesetters is a national program that encourages people of all ages to exercise.

Members of Alpha Gamma Delta also volunteer their time to local causes. They can be seen wearing Alpha Gamma Delta sweatshirts, hats, T-shirts, pins, and apparel on campus and in the community while using their skills and services to improve the lives of others. Alpha Gamma Delta cares about people and the world and strives to make a difference in the lives of those who need help the most.

Many of the members of Alpha Gamma Delta have gone on to do great things with their lives and careers. Some of the most accomplished alumni are Senator Jennie Meador Forehand, Alabama State Auditor Anna (Beth) Killough Chapman, first female State Treasurer of Illinois Judy Baar Topinka, Alabama State Treasurer Kay Ivey, Country Singer Donna Fargo, Winner of the Survivor Allstars T.V. show 2004 Amber Brkich, Opera Star Brenda Hemann Harris, Former Editor of Vogue magazine Lorraine Jensen Davis, Author and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes Lois Kroeber Wille, News anchor Karen Boudrie, and many more. These alumni and all of the members of Alpha Gamma Delta show that their mission statement, “Alpha Gamma Delta is an international fraternity for women that exists to provide opportunities for personal development through the spirit of sisterhood,” is honored and followed through their lives.

The official colors of Alpha Gamma Delta are red, buff, and green. College campuses all over the nation have members who wear these colors on their Alpha Gamma Delta flip flops, bracelets, rings, and other jewelry. At formal events the colors are also a must with Alpha Gamma Delta party favors, glasses, and other merchandise. During rush these colors are also important, when students pledge Alpha Gamma Delta in hopes of becoming a member. Alpha Gamma Delta hoody sweatshirts, pins, hats, and clothing are worn by pledges to show their loyalty.

Pledges are eventually accepted into Alpha Gamma Delta and there is an induction ceremony to make them full members. They take an oath to uphold and live by the values of Alpha Gamma Delta. Alpha Gamma Delta sisters may give new members gifts like pins, blankets, and other merchandise. This is a day to remember when you take your oath to live by the values and ideals of Alpha Gamma Delta.
