The notion of Greek life goes back into the very foundations of higher education. It’s a natural development for college students – and a commitment to be proud of.

You picked your Greek organization for a reason. They in turn picked you for a reason. Between the two of you, there’s a natural fit, a union that couldn’t have been made any other way. Each Greek organization has a different focus, a different reputation, a different atmosphere around the house. That makes it unique.

Not only does joining bring the camaraderie of belonging to something bigger, it also brings keepsakes for you to wear so that you can showcase your Greek pride. Anyone can wear a shirt with their college’s name on it, but only member of the Greek organization can wear the shirt of that Greek organization. It’s considered uncouth for someone to fly the colors, but not put up the pledge to the organization. The Greek shirt lets others know that you’ve committed to something.

A hard responsibility Greek letter shirts leave no doubt as to where you belong. It lets others know that you’ve made the commitment to a higher calling, that you’re a representative of something larger than yourself. Wherever you go, your Greek shirt marks you as an extension of your organization. That can be quite a sign of pride; again, not everyone who applies to be a member gets the acceptance. But it can bring a burden as well.

Being a representative of your Greek organization means that you must hold yourself to a higher standard, and become an example to others. That entails academic excellence, personal charity…the whole works. Falling short of high personal standards sets your Greek organization back in a number of ways.

For one thing, your Greek organization could lose out on the opportunity to recruit new members because of your behavior – there are some people out there that no one wants to be lumped in with. Furthermore, it lets down your siblings and might even pave the way for ramifications later on. That’s one of the reasons why Greek life encourages academic and personal excellence – it makes you accountable to more people than just yourself.

These are the things that should go through your head, along with your Greek letter shirts. It’s a tremendous honor and a burden simultaneously. But by joining and committing yourself a higher set of ideals, you set yourself on the way to a future much brighter than you might have had otherwise. That’s a lot to think of every time you pull you Greek shirt out of the wash!
