Kappa Alpha Psi first became a fraternity on January 5, 1911 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Originally the fraternity was named Kappa Alpha Nu, but this name was changed to Kappa Alpha Psi in 1915. The founders of the fraternity were Elder Watson Diggs, John Milton Lee, Byron K. Armstrong, Guy Levis Grant, Ezra D. Alexander, Henry T. Asher, Marcus P. Blakemore, Paul W. Caine, Edward G. Irvin, and George W. Edmonds. These ten men realized the dream of a truly democratic fraternity that allowed membership to people of any race.

Kappa Alpha Psi has the motto “Achievement in every field of human endeavor.” The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity works hard to live up to this motto. They have certain expectations of every member academically as well as personally. Members of this fraternity are expected to live by the values of Kappa Alpha Psi which are dedication, maturity, good disposition, wisdom, group participation while retaining individuality, responsibility, constructive criticism, commitment to leadership training, lifelong financial support to the fraternities programs, and strive and achieve excellence in all endeavors. Being a member of this fraternity is a life commitment to Kappa Alpha Psi and everything they stand for.

The Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation holds the vision of being at the top of the greek letter fraternities when it comes to community service. The mission of the foundation is “To provide support for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated members and others in service to communities with particular emphasis on African-American communities.” You can see Kappa Alpha Psi members helping in their communities wearing their Kappa Alpha Psi sweatshirts, hats, clothing, hoody sweatshirts, T-shirts, and other apparel and merchandise. The brothers of this fraternity truly have a strong commitment to helping others.

Kappa Alpha Psi also supports its members with scholarships and leadership education. There are leadership conferences at many different colleges all across America for Kappa Alpha Psi members. You can see alumni and members wearing their Kappa Alpha Psi rings, bracelets, and other jewelry at these educational functions. The fraternity also supports national projects like Habitat for Humanity and after school programs. Scholarships are available for members who have exceptional academic skills and are active in the fraternal programs and leadership development.

The Kappa Alpha Psi official colors are crimson and creme. These colors can be seen all year round on members of Kappa Alpha Psi. Members wear their hats, shirts, sweatshirts, and more at fraternal gatherings. Kappa Alpha Psi merchandise can especially be seen during rush time. This is one of the ways pledges show their enthusiasm and desire to become a member. Once the pledges are accepted they have an induction ceremony. At the ceremony Kappa Alpha Psi party favors and other merchandise are available to reflect the spirit of the event. Inductees often receive gifts like pins, a flask, blanket, or a Kappa Alpha Psi glass at the ceremony. Then the members wear their pins at formals and on other fraternal gatherings, ceremonies, and occasions.
